"William Douglass, Earl Nupp, Ira Nupp, and Frank Nupp, of Green township, were arrested by Constable Jacob Wttling, on a information made before 'Squire James Crossman, by Rev. E. G. DeLove, charging the defendants with disturbing a religious meeting."
"The trouble occured on Tuesday night, may 9, at No. 9 school house in Green township. Rev. DeLove claims the defendants locked the door and would not let him enter the building, not would they permit the people who were within, to come out. The defendants gave bail in the sum of $500 before 'Squire B.F. Williams, of Cookport, for their appearance for a hearing before 'Squire Crossman on Saturday."

"Emerson L. Knepper, 87, Berlin, died May 5, 2002, at Somerset Hospital. Born Aug. 27, 1914 in Stonycreek Township, son of Alvin R. and Susan (Meyers) Knepper. Preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Linda Knepper Brant; brother, Meyers Knepper; and two sisters, Leora Saylor Walker and Gladys Darr. Survived by his wife of 62 years, Hazel (Landis) Knepper; four sons, Ronald, married to the former Helen Ann Hillegass, Andover, Mass., David, Arlington, Va., Richard, married to the former Ann Smith, Keene, N.H., and Thomas, married to Mary Ann, Ligonier; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Thelma, married to Chester Long, Friedens; and a son-in-law, James Brant, Friedens. Member and deacon at the Brothersvalley Church of the Brethren, Brotherton. Past president and board member of Shanksville-Stonycreek High School. He was a graduate of Somerset High School, class of 1932. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin, and on Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m., the time of service, at the Brothersvalley Church of the Brethren, Brotherton. The following is Harmon's obituary, which I found at http://www.iltrails.org/Jackson/avaobit.htm.
"One of the most unlooked for and shocking events that ever occurred in this section happened Tuesday in Kinkaid township, the sudden and violent death of Herman Kessel, the highly respected and well-to-do farmer living six miles south of this city. The circumstances were like this: Mr. Kessel, with his son George, started to Ava with a four horse-team after a load of lumber. When near Jacob Wills the horses took fright and threw the younger man out of the wa[g]on, when he was quite badly injured on the face and head through being run over by the wheels. Nevertheless, father and son continued on to town and loaded up with lumber.
"Upon the return trip, and when near the spot where the first accident occurred, the team again took fright and ran away, this time throwing the elder Kessel violently to the ground or rather into and under the wheels, when he was run over and dangerously hurt. The injured man was placed by friends into a spring wagon, taken home to his family and Dr. A.N. Stout, of Ava, sent for, but he died about 8 o'clock that night.
The funeral service took place at the residence and the burial in the Bower graveyard, on Thursday, Rev. Wm. Barringer performing the ceremony. There was a very large attendance.
"Following are the relatives of the unfortunate man, who remain to mourn his departure:
"The widow, Mrs. ____Kessel; Herman (who married a daughter of John W. Jones); John, Fred, George, Anna, Martha; Mrs. James Manor, and Mrs. Cyrus Bower, all excellent people.
"Herman Kessel, who was aged about 70 years, was a highly respected and prosperous German-American farmer of Dry Hill, and, indeed, there was no better thought of man anywhere. His untimely taking off, just when he was best able to enjoy life with home and friends, is universally regretted.
On the same morning of the accident another son of the deceased was quite badly injured, John Kessel has started to go to a neighbors on horseback, and upon arriving at a low [w]ire fence he got down, put his foot on the top wire and attempted to lead the horse over. The animal, however caught his hind foot in the wire, when he commenced kicking, at the same time crowding Kessel into the fence, when his clothing was badly torn and his leg severely lacerated by the jagged wires. The day was certainly filled with misfortune for the Kessel family."
