"College Mourns Passing of Mother Mary Evarista, S.N.D.

- A Valient Woman - "Who shall find a valiant woman?" The modern world might well seek the answer to this Scriptural query from those who have come in contact with a valiant woman of our day - Mother Mary Evarista. As provincial superior of the Sisters of Notre Dame, this valiant woman has been their guide and inspiration over a period of twenty-five years.Who but Christ Himself can count the love, the sacrifice, the untiring devotion, and self-effacing charity that marked these fruitful years! How fully the trust placed in her has been repaid in the rich harvestings that have blessed the Cleveland province during the years of her enlightened leadership!
- Always a staunch upholder of thoroughness and a lover of tradition, Mother Mary Evarista never hesitated to take the initiative when the exigencies of the hour advised new adjustments and an extension of the field of labor for the dissemination of Catholic thought and inviolable truth. During her incumbency schools - parochial, high, collegiate - have flourished over a large area, from the west coast of California to the nation's capital. Her wide experience as teach, organist, principal, and administrator in several capacities, constituted her the ideal religious superior. Conversant with the needs of Mother Church in the effort to spread the light of faith and Carry on the spiritual warfare against the insidious foe of irreligion, Mother Mary Evarista was foremost in seizing the opportunity for the advancement of Catholic higher education. Posterity will easily remember her as a religious educator of distinction and prudent foresight, of absolute integrity and tenacity of purpose when the cause was just. Hers was a spontaneity and a self-forgetting enthusiasm that elicited a wholehearted response from those who were priviledged to feel the charm of her personality.
- As co-foundress and president of Notre Dame College, she has sent forth women of strong principles, many of whom have become leaders in their respective spheres in the social, economic, and religious life. Her own religious and their countless charges as well as the many who in other capacities came under her influence, can testify to her unflinching loyalty in the face of difficulties, her understanding sympathy, her motherly kindliness and deep humility. All who have come within the radius of this beloved personality cannot but pay tribute to a great spiritual leader, an outstanding educator, a sympathetic friend, an ardent lover of the land over which Old Glory waves, and an apostle overflowing with the charity of Christ.
- Once more, Notre Dame College honors its first president, Mother Mary Evarista, S.N.D., but this time it is in memory of her gallant life and accomplishments.
- A religious for fifty-three years, Mother Mary Evarista was a pioneer in education and has acted as president since the foundation of the college in 1922. She has been Superior of the Sisters of Notre Dame in the Cleveland Province since 1918 until her death, Sunday, August 1.
- Studied Abroad - Highlights of her life include her five years of study and service abroad from 1906 to 1911. On returnig to this country Mother Mary Evarista served as district superior of Notre Dame Sisters in the Covington, KY. diocese, and in the Toledo, O. diocese. In 1917 she returned to Cleveland as first assistant superior and held that posistion until 1918, when she was elected provincial superior.
- Mother Mary Evarista returned to Europe in 1925 to take part in the election of the superior general, Mother Mary Antonie, and in 1936, while in Rome on official business of her order, had a private audience with Pope Pius XI.
- Professed 1891 - One of twelve children, Mother Mary Evarista was the former Anna Harks. She was born in Cleveland Feb. 10, 1867, and entered the Notre Dame convent on Dec. 8, 1887, and recieved the religious habit one year later. She was professed on august 5, 1891.
- Mother Mary Evarista was an accomplished musician and energetic leader. Under her direction 520 sisters were guided, and she started other foundations in California, Washington, D.C., Tennessee and Oregon.
- Golden Jubilee - Mother Mary Evarista made several appearances at the college, notable among these being her golden anniversary celebration here, May 6, 1941. She was also present for the first accelerated graduation, Febuary of last year.
- On Tuesday, August 3, the entire faculty and student body attended a requiem high mass for Mother Mary Evarista in the convent chapel on Ansel Rd. the Rev. James McDonough officiated, with the Rev. Edward Halloran and the Rev. Frederick C. Dietz assisting."

- Father John Harks, pastor of St. Louis’ Catholic church, Sixth street, East Side, was killed instantly by an interurban car on the Woodville road Monday morning.
- After celabrating a low mass as was hid daily custom, Father Harks left his residence, adjoining the church, and explained to his housekeeper that he intended enjoying a long walk.
- The clergyman visited Noe Bourdeau, 636 Plymouth stree, on the latter’s farm near the scene of the accident. Father Harks had intended to board an inbound car to return to the city but mistook an approaching limited for a local car.
- He held out his arm which was struck by the car as it speeded by. This knocked him down and the suction dragged him under the wheels.
- At 10:30 a.m. Glegg Bros., Starr avenue undertakers, received a telephone call from a Lake Shore electric car crew announcing that the priest had been run down at Stop No. 337. The body was taken to Glegg’s establishment. The head was crushed.
- As the news of the fatality was spread through the French parish several old friends, including George Sheets who was mayor in Toledo in 1886, waited at the morgue and wept bitterly as the body was carried in.
- Father Harks who had been a priest for 39 years was a brother of Rev. William A. Harks, rector of St. Michael’s Catholic church on Sandusky street, Manhattan.
- Father Harks in October, 1907, observed the 25th anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood. He was pastor of St. Louis church at that time.
- Rev. Father Harks was ordained at La Rochelle, France, Oct.2, 1882, by Bishop Thomas, afterward archbishop of Rouen. From 1874 to the date of his ordination he studied at Besancon and Paris. After his ordination he took a course for one year at College Stanislaus in Paris.

He served five years in Brittany, St. Brieuc, several years at Cannes and at Toulause, and seven years at Bordaeu. In 1900 he returned to America, and after serving several months at St. Stephen’s church, Cleveland, came in April, 1901, to St. Louis’ church, Toledo, where he had since labored.
- Father Harks was a linguist of ability, and besides his duties for his church had made a number of translations of works or recognized merit."

"Father Harks Loses Long Fight For Life
Founder of St. Michael’s Church Succumbs At 83 After Valiant Battle Against Illness

- The Rev. William A. Harks, 83, pastor emeritus and founder of St. Michael’s church, Chase and Sandusky streets, died in St. Vincent’s hospital late yesterday after an amazing battle against an eight-year illness.
- The Clergyman, who devoted nearly 58 years of his life to the service of the Catholic church, often perplexed physicians who marveled at his struggle against a diabetic condition which kept him bed-ridden in the hospital since Feb.25,1930.
- Despite his advanced years and his failing condition Father Harks exhibited astounding tenacity during his illness, even at times when his ailment became such that it was necessary to amputate his left leg and tigh and again when the disease spread to his other leg, resulting in the partial lose of his right foot.
- He was the oldest Catholic clergyman in the Toledo diocese and his name and word of his early works in the church were widespread in the Toledo area.

Served in Port Clinton

- At the completion of his grade school education in St. Peter’s parochial school, Cleveland, where he was born, Aug.8,1854, Father Harks became a bookkeeper, but his desire for education and his calling to the church took him to Louvain, Belgium, for his high school and college studies. He returned to Cleveland to pursue an advanced course in philosophy and theology in St. Mary’s seminary, and was ordained a priest July 4, 1880 in the Cleveland cathedral.
- In his first 10 years in the priesthood, Father Harks served at the Immaculate Conception church, Port Clinton; Sacred Heart parish, Toledo; and St. Joseph’s church, Massillon, O. Following that he was appointed pastor of the Sacred Heart parish in New Bavaria, O and served there for 10 years before coming to Toledo permanantly in 1900.
- He was assigned then to institute and promote the newly established St. Michael’s parish here and in his preliminary work he suppervised purchase of the land upon which the church now is located, and the erection of the church and school buildings.
- The parish officially was founded on July 24, 1900, and while the new church property was being acquired and its buildings constructed, Father Harks held services in several North Toledo locations.
- The first service of the new church was held in Wheeler’s hall, Columbus and Summit strees, in the summer and fall of 1900. During the winter the Albany Street Methodist Episcopal church was rented and here the affairs of St. Michael’s parish were conducted by Father Harks until Easter Sunday, 1901, when the present church officially was opened.

Courage Praised

- Father Harks continued as pastor of the parish until he was stricken. During the early months of his illness various assistants and temporary pastors were appointed to the parish and when he was declared pastor emeritus, the parish leadership was given to the present pastor, the Rev. H.T. Waechter.
- Dr. N.J. Seybold, who attended Father Harks during his illness, said the priest suffered from diabetes, hardening of the arteries and high blood pressure. He praised highly the priest’s courageous fight to overcome his illness even after he was thought to be dying five years ago.
- Father Harks is survived by three sisters: Mother Mary Evarista, provincial superior of the Notre Dame sisters of Cleveland, and the Misses Catherine and Margaret Harks, also of Cleveland. His brother, the Rev. John Harks, of St. Louis parish here, was killed April 25, 1921, in Woodville road when he was hit by an interurban car.
- The body of Father Harks will be in the Zahnie & Schramm funeral home until 3 p.m. tomorrow when it will be taken to St. Michael’s church when prayers will be said. It will remain in the church until 8:30 a.m. Saturday, then will be taken to St. Francis de Sales cathedral, Cherry and Superior streets, for services beginning at 10 a.m. Bishop Karl J. Alter will pontificate at solemn high funeral services in the cathedral. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery."

"Death of Aged Retired Somerset County Teacher
Mrs. Abbie H. Weigle, 96, early Somerset County school teacher and for a long time an active member of the Woman's Christian Temperance union, died last Saturday in the Cambria County Hospital. A resident of Johnstown since 1901, she was the oldest member of the Moxham Lutheran Church. Mrs. Weigle was born on Jan. 12, 1850, in the pioneer farming community of Morgan's woolen blanket factory, Jenner Twp., Somerset County, a daughter of the late John and Amanda Hill. She was reared near Shanksville, where her father once operated a woolen mill. Both her parents taught school in one of Somerset County's first one-room schoolhouses. As a girl she walked many miles to attend school in Stoystown, and at the age of 17 she began as a teacher in the same schoolhouse where her parents had given her her first schooling. Ten years later, on Apr. 12, 1877, she became the bride of Jacob Weigle, of Shanksville and the couple operated a farm near Friedens until 1901 when they moved to Johnstown, where Mr. Weigle died many years ago. Surviving Mrs. Weigle is one daughter, Mrs. Elsie Havice of Reedsville, Pa., and one sister, Mrs. Ida Jane Miller of Garrett. She also leaves 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. After funeral services by her pastor in the Moxham Lutheran Church, Tuesday, her body was taken to Friedens for interment in her native soil."
